So what determines where I get to when I click the >> control? Are you able to "chunk up" the recording into different passages (like a change of speaker)?

Some thoughts on how to make this even better:
1. Better camera work - the camera being pointed at the podium means that I have lost the the speaker from time time 2. Audio - generally really good - but the panel discussions and audiene questions were not so easy to hear at times - where are the microphones, BTW? 3. Lighting - Good lighting on the speaker at the podium - but again the panel discussions were poorly lit. But all in all, a very welcome add on to the conference Rob

Really good service but would have liked the time displayed somewhere so I could point people to things that were said at a particular time - it's basically impossible right now (a killer for those 90 minute sessions!). PhilWilson

One of the people asking questions explicitly turned down use of a microphone - I think because the acoustics in the room are good and everyone physically present could hear. More awareness is needed and probably briefing the chairs to be strict, if that's what helps online viewers follow the discussion :-)

Those of you who kept watching after the finish just then may have seen me step up close to the camera and try to say something. What I forgot was to bring a mike with me..! I'll never get a job on the BBC.
Basically I just wanted to thank you die-hard live viewers for your interest and your excellent comments. We really appreciate it :-) I've had a lot of fun and we've learned a lot from doing this. We hope the keep the streams live for as long as possible. Our service is a pilot one only, and so it may be interrupted from time to time. Even so, please do keep returning, playing back the streams and letting us know what you think. |

I was unfortunatley not able to attend the conference this year due to budget constraints (!) so am finding these recordings extremely useful. Was not able to access at Uni due to the firewall, but watched one from home last night and was very impressed with both the quality and also the fact that you can see the slides in 'real time' too.

Watching the live feed from the office back in Oxford - very impressed with the quality. Minor glitches in the sound but no worse than e.g. BBC 6Music! It's good to be able to keep one ear on the discussion while doing other things, & know that I can go back and listen selectively with my full attention later. Thanks to everybody who helped set this up.

Your feedback is incredibly useful in helping us learn about using these technologies to record and stream a live conference. Keep letting us know your experiences. In particular, let us know...
* how it went for you * roughly where you're watching from * the benefits to you of watching online A lot of people have worked very hard to bring you these streams. Particular thanks to the whole streaming service team, the Computing Service Systems team and Andy Firth of the A.V. centre in particular. We'll be back on air tomorrow for the panel discussion and closing :) |

Hi, I've watched the other streams this morning and they were fine, but now (11.10 am) it is unwatchable - jerky video, bits of sound coming and going. Can anyone fix this for us out here?
Thanks, Ben Plumpton

The feed works very nicely. I lost connection once after about 30 minutes of viewing and had to re-load the page, but that was probably a problem at my end - I'm watching over broadband from home. Otherwise it worked very well.

We take the video signal, and the VGA signal from the presenter's computer, and feed them to an encoding PC fitted with appropriate capture cards. That PC is running two instances of Flash Media Encoder (free software from Adobe for Flash encoding), one for each signal. These each both record in FLV format and live stream to our Flash Media Server. The Flash movies were hand-built here to play the video streams side-by-side.
Great to hear you're impressed :) We're just scratching the surface with the possibilities I hope... |

Those for whom the sound is very low, try using headphones. The results are usually better than just using PC speakers. You can now play back the recorded sessions using the same link as before (see above).
Thanks for the feedback. Keep sending in your comments! |
