So what determines where I get to when I click the >> control? Are you able to "chunk up" the recording into different passages (like a change of speaker)?

Some thoughts on how to make this even better:
1. Better camera work - the camera being pointed at the podium means that I have lost the the speaker from time time 2. Audio - generally really good - but the panel discussions and audiene questions were not so easy to hear at times - where are the microphones, BTW? 3. Lighting - Good lighting on the speaker at the podium - but again the panel discussions were poorly lit.
But all in all, a very welcome add on to the conference

For the real ale lovers there are lots of options. Check out the York Brewery pubs the Yorkshire Terrier (Stonegate), the Three-Legged Mare (High Petergate) and the Last Drop (King's Square). Other good pubs are the Ackhorne off Micklegate and the Maltings by Lendal Bridge.
Check out the York branch of CAMRA for more options: http://www.yorkcamra.free-online.co.uk/

One of the people asking questions explicitly turned down use of a microphone - I think because the acoustics in the room are good and everyone physically present could hear. More awareness is needed and probably briefing the chairs to be strict, if that's what helps online viewers follow the discussion :-)

"HI Kriss,
I'm all for technology not getting in the way. They guy was probably thinking on his feet, bursting to talk, and so didn't want to wait for a microphone before replying and losing his train of thought. If you start telling people to stop and wait until the online sound quality is good, they'll wonder if they're at a conference or a TV broadcast.
On the other hand if you tell people that the microphone is needed for those in the room who are hard of hearing, they probably would accept that. So happily, our online audio needs can piggy back on the back of a local need transparently. This is much better, and similar to our transparent way of recording screen activity by piggy backing on the screen output being sent to the data projector. The presenter's didn't need to do anything special on their PCs/Macs for the screen recording to work, and that's how it should be.
I don't know whether V/045 has a "hearing loop" - a system feeding in-room audio specially to hearing aids - but that is used in some lectures in York (Rob Stone mentioned it once.) Ideally all large lecture theatres should have this though.
Anthony." It does have a hearing loop - quite a few of the large ones do.
That's a good way of putting it, to persuade people to use the mikes. Maybe there's a need for more than one in use at a time.

Those of you who kept watching after the finish just then may have seen me step up close to the camera and try to say something. What I forgot was to bring a mike with me..! I'll never get a job on the BBC.
Basically I just wanted to thank you die-hard live viewers for your interest and your excellent comments. We really appreciate it :-) I've had a lot of fun and we've learned a lot from doing this.
We hope the keep the streams live for as long as possible. Our service is a pilot one only, and so it may be interrupted from time to time. Even so, please do keep returning, playing back the streams and letting us know what you think.

There wasn't a page so I created one (I'll let Stephen do the rest).
Meanwhile I'll add as a comment the Big Issues that I heard articulated in this and other sessions in terms of using third-party services:
1. DPA & European Economic Area and storing content outside of it. 2. Exit Strategy - how do your get your content out again? And remember to verify this as some vendors lie. 3. Fit (or lack of it) of service with institutional authentication/authorisation scheme.

I was unfortunatley not able to attend the conference this year due to budget constraints (!) so am finding these recordings extremely useful. Was not able to access at Uni due to the firewall, but watched one from home last night and was very impressed with both the quality and also the fact that you can see the slides in 'real time' too.

Watching the live feed from the office back in Oxford - very impressed with the quality. Minor glitches in the sound but no worse than e.g. BBC 6Music! It's good to be able to keep one ear on the discussion while doing other things, & know that I can go back and listen selectively with my full attention later. Thanks to everybody who helped set this up.

Your welcome. Makes it all worth it :-) I am passing on these comments to the rest of my team, but they're all too shy to log on! Yes, later selecttive watching is a big plus. I'm working on creating "snippets" of talks that people can link directly to. Check out the "favourite joke so far" link on the wiki home page.
The sound levels and auto-exposure made things difficult during discussion session but I hope you were still able to follow things roughly. Thanks again.

We're using Flash technologies. (I wrote a reply outside this thread earlier.) Basically we take the video signal, and the VGA signal sent to the data projector, and feed them to an in-room PC fitted with PCI capture cards. That PC is running two instances of Flash Media Encoder (free software from Adobe), one for each signal. These each both record in FLV format and live stream to our Flash Media Server. The Flash movies were hand-built here to play the two video streams side-by-side."
With luck I'll get time to write this up in more detail somewhere. Marieke (IWMW chair, currently on maternity leave) mentioned maybe doing an ARIADNE article...

Wow - thanks a lot! Great to hear that. I thought the pleanaries were excellent on yesterday. Great technical talks and lots of visuals which look great when streamed.
We've learned a lot from doing this. Next time we'll hopefully be a little more automated... it's been a marathon this time :)

Your feedback is incredibly useful in helping us learn about using these technologies to record and stream a live conference. Keep letting us know your experiences. In particular, let us know...
* how it went for you * roughly where you're watching from * the benefits to you of watching online
A lot of people have worked very hard to bring you these streams. Particular thanks to the whole streaming service team, the Computing Service Systems team and Andy Firth of the A.V. centre in particular.
We'll be back on air tomorrow for the panel discussion and closing :)

I'm at the University of Manchester, on what's normally an excellent internet connection. But maybe there was just a lot of internet traffic between here and York at the time! I restarted my browser and it got just about bearable by about 11.25. Now I'm listening live again (11.48) and it's absolutely fine. Ah well. Thanks for your help, Ben
